Butterfly Displays show traffic information from many different collision warning devices based on FLARM® or ADS-B. Pilots see nearby traffic on a simple to use clean display. Glider pilots can see at a glance who is climbing well nearby, where the team partner is or who is in the aircraft next to you. Butterfly Displays gives you situational awareness that you've never experienced before.
Even though providing significant functionality, Butterfly Displays still are easy to use. Basically, Butterfly Displays require very little handling. A rotary knob serves as the main input device. The knob is intentionally rather large, its haptics are appealing, and it is easy to operate even with gloves or in turbulence. Besides having a turning function, the knob can also be pushed like a button.
In contrast to normal FLARM® displays or FLARM® devices, Butterfly Displays show the complete traffic picture i.e. the overall traffic situation is shown and not just the next aircraft.
If there is no danger (a normal FLARM® device would not provide a warning) the surrounding traffic is shown in a radar format. Each traffic participant is symbolized by a small arrow or circle. Arrows symbolize aircrafts flying straight-in, blue circles symbolize turning gliders. The knob is used to select traffic participants on the screen (green marking). The page on the selected aircraft also provides detailed information such as the difference in altitude, climb rates, identification and distance.
The push button is used to display detailed information on traffic participants or access the settings menu. If a selected traffic participant has an entry in FlarmNet, pushing the turning knob will disply the details.
With Butterfly Displays you can see traffic minutes before it becomes a danger. Should another aircraft get dangerously close, the Butterfly Displays will reliably warn you. Butterfly Displays warn you about dangerous traffic - exactly as you are used to from e.g. FLARM®. In addition, more complex situations with several potential collision objects or a tight team flight are recognised and intuitively presented.
If Butterfly Displays are used together with Transponder receivers, even nondirectional alarms for aircrafts equipped with transponders can be displayed.
Butterfly Displays also have advanced warning options. In cases where team partners are flying closely and could become dangerous, these are also indicated in the warning as additional information. Should a whole group of aircraft come dangerously close, the number of collision opponents is indicated in the warning screen.
Aircraft that circle are highlighted separately in the radar view. This facilitates differentiating between tactically important traffic (climbing aircrafts) and others at all times. To facilitate the identification of aircrafts, the direction of circling is also indicated. Butterfly Displays evaluate several parameters of the traffic received. Amongst other things, they calculate exact climb rates for each aircraft received and filter these continuously. This provides reliable information on thermal quality in the surroundings of circling aircrafts.
To make it easier to recognize team partners, it is possible to mark these with a different colour (orange). This allows you to keep an eye on the team partner's position, even in situations with a high volume of traffic (in competitions prior to take-off). Especially in team flying, Butterfly Displays can provide great assistance, for example in situations in which the team partner is in the blind spot.
The external display can be turned 90°-wise into any direction as desired and is therefore equally easy-to-use for both right-handed and left-handed persons. It can be installed in portrait or landscape mode.
Butterfly Displays can be connected to any FLARM®-compatible device and to Garrecht ADS-B receivers. Butterfly Displays automatically adjust to the data rate used by the FLARM® device and configure it automatically, if necessary - thereby saving you complicated manual configuration. Existing FLARM® display cable connections can simply be transferred. To replace an old FLARM® display with a Butterfly Display, simply replace the display only - everything else remains in the aircraft.
